FERMA was contracted by Level 10 to perform the demolition of an existing bank and parking garage, followed by mass excavation to a depth of 65 feet in downtown San Jose.
The demolition scope included complete removal of the structures, including foundations and associated site improvements.
The earthwork scope involved the excavation and removal of 136,800 cubic yards of clean, reusable soil.
A primary challenge of the project was transporting excavated material through an active downtown environment while maintaining schedule requirements.
To meet production demands, FERMA planned for an average of 60 truckloads per day and reduced traffic impacts through advanced logistics planning and the use of specialized hauling trucks.
On-site truck scales were utilized to maximize payload efficiency and further reduce the total number of truck trips required.
Through these combined methods, FERMA reduced the project’s overall carbon footprint by 14 percent while maintaining schedule and operational efficiency.
